Every picture has a story to tell

Say hi to the “Dragons” in my neighborhood.

Fret not folks, pls don’t press the panic button and start to evacuate!

What I am going to show you next are not real dragons. ^^

They are however, one of the oldest “relic” you probably can find in Singapore. – playgrounds modeled after the mystical creature known as dragons.

I bet you will probably feel a little sentimental after seeing the below images if you have been living in or visited Singapore in the early 1980s. =)

A sad fact but these playgrounds (featuring dragons) are fast becoming “extinct” in Singapore.

I reckon that there are only 2-3 of such playgrounds left in Singapore.

When I was young, I always spend most of my time after school hanging around the area, back then it was a popular spot amongst kids.

Guess kids these days prefer an ipad then having a little joy ride on the pony in the playground ^^

I guess It’s great that I took up photography.

It’s timely because I can re-capture my childhood memories convert them into images and store them into my little blog so that I can share with the future generations that once a upon a time, the mystical creatures known as dragons actually came and graced our little sleepy neighborhood. =)

it’s sad that such playgrounds are getting replaced by the “safe” type :( last year, the m1 fringe festival did a photo series (“school of hard knocks”) on such playgrounds too.

      Hi Olivia,
Yes, I agree with you, its very sad that these are slowly fading out.
They ought to keep a few! – I think they are still the coolest and the most iconic looking playgrounds around Singapore!

No dragons, but I remember the pony on the spring my daughter used to ride on. Now my grandkids play soccer in the back yard during the summer or play basketball, go bike riding or inline skating, but they live in a small town and there’s no playground like that around.

The third photo has a mystical quality. I really like that one. It is sad that kids get caught up in the computer world and often forget their ability to creat their own fun these days.

Love these! When I visited China last year I also noticed that dragons formed part of a lot of place-names and play-areas.
As for parks – I loved them as a little kid, and I’m definitely buying a house near a park for my kids, one day when it is time.

Thanks for your comment. You yourself are a terrific photographer, and I look forward to following your work for some inspiration. It just so happens that I have a special place in my heart for Singapore as well. I lived there when I was very young — 1990-1993 — my earliest memories all take place in Singapore :)
